Balayage vs. Highlights: What's the Difference?

Stylist painting balayage onto hair at a salon

Walk into our salon in Lake Worth Beach and ask for lighter hair, and your stylist will probably ask you back: balayage or highlights? Both brighten your hair, but the technique, the look and the upkeep are quite different.

Traditional highlights

Highlights use foils to lighten sections of hair from root to tip in a consistent pattern. The result is an even, all-over brightness with clear contrast. Because the lightener starts at the root, grow-out is more visible, so highlights usually need a touch-up every six to eight weeks.

Balayage

Balayage is a freehand painting technique. Your stylist paints lightener onto the surface of the hair, concentrating on the mid-lengths and ends. The result is a soft, sun-kissed gradient — like your hair lightened naturally over a summer at the beach.

Because balayage doesn't start at the root, it grows out beautifully with no harsh line. Many clients go three to four months between appointments, which makes it a favorite for busy schedules.

Which should you choose?

Choose highlights if you love a brighter, more uniform blonde from root to tip. Choose balayage if you want a softer, lower-maintenance look. Not sure? Book a consultation with our stylists at El Encanto Beauty Salon & Spa — call (561) 312-2203 and we'll plan the look together.
